I am very excited to introduce RainShadow Labradors' new concept of "Started Puppies!"
"Started" usually refers to older dogs, but here we start training infant and toddler puppies to listen and obey!
ALL of the attention and respect of a Started dog, with the unbonded freshness of a Pup! Bonding with only YOU.

Here are some videos of our puppy preparation processes.... Real life, no big screen budget here! Just little snapshots of how we raise YOUR puppy!
This is what you get!
10 weeks is an ideal amount of time for the pup to be exposed to the littermates. They learn to be a dog during this time. Here's how I take advantage of the time!
(I posted "the long version" of this on the facebook page.)
Eye contact and Calm are the first steps to puppy manners!
This is what we're looking for, and what we train our puppies to do.. for YOU! They're listening!
It requires consistency and patience, but the reward will last the whole life of your dog!
Ok... New kennel (that day), New companions (blended the litters that day), Thundershower (first time ever), First time asking them for respect at this gate (trained them in other places.)
Check this response out!
This video is using two puppies against one another. Using their desire for attention as challenge and reward.
But the same techniques apply to training your individual puppy at home.
Never reward the bad behavior with affection.
Always reward the good behavior with affection.
It's amazing how quickly they catch on!
You think training a puppy to stay down is hard alone, add a 3yo! But they get it! Pups and Kids all get it! Even in the whole pack... watch the pups trying so hard to be good!
This is how I START the food dish training process. It's also how you should start food dish training at your home! It'll be review for your puppy, and it'll get them right back into the groove at their new home!
This video shows elements of the whole puppy pack "Food Dish Training" process... disengaging them from what they WANT and engaging them on WHO they need to look to. (It works the same way for an individual puppy, but WAY easier!)
It was supposed to be a performance, but they didn't perform, so I had to go back to training... you get to see the whole process in one short session.
These pups needed another level on the challenge meter... so I got them to sit, watching, smelling, and hearing food being loaded in the trough, and then waiting for me to release them! 8 Weeks!
Using the already established disciplines to flow seamlessly into Hold and Come to affection. No food required!
(Had to use the gopro editor to make the video long enough to link...)
If they break... you CAN get them back! Even at 10 weeks! They understand. They'll listen.... STARTED puppies will, anyway!
If you can change up your training routine, they learn that it's about LISTENING, not about performing the ritual!
Same commands, Different look. Conditioning them to be SENT!
They are physically free to disobey! But they LISTEN!
You do NOT have to fear a male puppy... you have to LEAD him!!
Submission = Patience
Here is a demonstration of applying the training to the pup once you get home. I do it with the pack, but you do the SAME thing with the individual.
Throwing the puppies off by doing the same disciplines, but in a totally different way - It makes them LISTEN! They're not just performing a ritual, they're listening to YOU!
How and when to say your command words. Don't be random. Speak them sharply at exactly the right moment.
Bring them BACK to the initial point of command, or they won a little bit of ground! It matters to a dog's mind!
How and Why to repeat commands while they're learning them.
If you wait, longer and unpredictable durations, they'll understand it's not ritual, it's LISTENING!
Distractions are almost necessary! The teachable moments abound!
This is NOT a lesser dog. She's just gentle! She's smart as can be, but she's going to need a GENTLE hand. She'll be amazing!
Running through the basics of the leash session. Use it to teach/reinforce sit, come, heel, down, roll over, or whatever you want!
This is how the RainShadow Puppies are conditioned, and you can continue (or start) your own puppy the same way. Teach them barking DOESN'T work!
Lily's 6mo Old pup came for a visit, afraid of water. She left jumping headlong into the pool while completely alone! Jealousy, Excitement, FUN, Competition... NEVER force or demand. They'll get it.
Some feedback from the new homes!
Our training with Sadie has been going really well compared to my last dog. My last dog was a terrier and was much more high strung. We are working on water retrieving. She is doing well but often gets distracted because she just loves to play in the water.
Even though she gets distracted in the water she loves to please me when practicing at home. She loves to do her “tricks” and just looks for a praise like “good girl” when she does it right. She knows sit, paw, other paw, down, and wait. She’s gets along great with every dog she meets and looks forward to seeing her sister Gemma that lives next to us. She is the happiest, and sweetest dog I have ever met. My whole family and I are in love with her!
We are completely amazed how smart this little guy is!!! Just the first night he already knows the command “Bed” and goes and lays on his bed. You are an amazing trainer and have made our life so much easier. Glenn is in total Awe of what a great dog Cole is and is going to be. We will highly recommend you and your dogs to everyone
We picked up a lab pup from Rainshadow/Steve a couple months ago. He's about 3.5 months old now.
He is without a doubt the smartest, kindest, quickest learning pup in the history of pups.
I simply can't say enough good about Steve's pups.
This is actually the 2nd pup we've taken home from Steve. The first was a pup he donated to a charity auction. Keeping that pup overnight was enough to convince my wife and I that we actually did want another dog (we were pretty sure we were done.)
You can see the love and care he puts into rearing amazing pups.
If you are wondering about the breeder, he has my 100% confidence.
100% unsolicited.
I just know that not all dog breeders are the same, and these pups get the best possible care, attention and training.
Have had our pup, Betsy (from Leia's litter) , for a full week now. Can say she is the easiest, most willing/enthusiastic learner I have ever trained. There's clearly something to the puppy training.
The obedience clearly transferred from Steve, to my wife and I.
I highly recommend these pups.
We can not speak highly enough of Rainshadow labradors! We have raised 3 labs prior to Easton (our rainshadow lab puppy) 2 of which are still with us and not one has even come close to the caliber of puppy Easton is. The biggest difference to our family is not only that he came home already knowing basic commands, but he was taught attentiveness and to really listen. This has made the transition to our home a very smooth one. Further training has been a piece of cake, as he’s eager to learn and please beyond anything we’ve seen in another puppy. The work Steve has put into these puppies is evident. They have great temperaments and awesome manners. We love our puppy!
We got a pup from Steve last summer. Ruby has been great. Calm mannered but still a puppy! Very birdy. Insane bird drive actually.
And if you worry about if they’re tough, don’t. I’ve had her out this past week dummy training everyday at -56 F. Doesn’t phase her…Of course the sessions are short but she’s eager to go. 30 below is no problem at all. Take her out for an hour roaming around and she’s fine. No jacket no booties. And still ready to go when it’s time to go inside.
Ruby showed up with good manners and well started. Steve was great to work with picking a pup out for us and went above and beyond taking care of shipping her up here.
If you’re looking for a lab you should talk to to Steve

RainShadow Labradors is a family of people, who own and breed a family of Labs.
These aren't "kennel dogs" who live in cages to breed. These aren't backyard dogs, whose family one day said, "Hey, the dog is pregnant! Wonder how that happened?!?!" These were carefully selected as puppies, and are personally owned as dogs.
Each dog has an owner/master who cares for and handles them as their lifestyle dictates. They freely interact with each other, daily. The dogs each have very individual lives, discipline levels, and habitual patterns. They are intentionally bred to create a line of exceptional puppies.
These puppies are READY TO LEARN!
We do all the normal stuff... 3 immunization shots, worm treatment, (Our adults are on a steady supplement of diatomaceous earth, so they maintain excellent gut health, but we still worm treat as a preventative measure,) dew claw removal, kid socialization, pack socialization, adult socialization (dogs and people), etc.
But in addition to that, we put the pups on a very early ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) therapy program, and from the moment of weaning, we start with the puppy manners program we've developed to gate train, door train, food train, and create an atmosphere of respect and attentiveness to the PERSON. It works! They LISTEN!!!
(See the videos.)
They're ready and eager for all the "puppy training" you can throw at them... Potty, Fetch, Kennel, Leash, Heel, Sit, Come, etc... right from 10 weeks old! They will watch YOU to see what you expect of them!
As we sallie forth into the era of "Let's go Brandon" Inflation, and as we up our puppy conditioning game to include several hours of hands-on work per puppy per week, we are raising the asking price to $1000 for males, and $1200 for females.
We are also open to trades. (I like the barter system, and want to do my part to keep it alive!)
We don't limit registrations, as I see that as an imposition of my will onto your freedom. I may change my tune about that someday, but for now, the golden rule wins! I don't want some mortal person telling me what I can and can't do in any context.. so I try to treat others that way as well!

(Lots of people ask!) It's a climate region thing... Decades ago, I began doing business, custom crafting, and raising dogs in the Rain Shadow of the Olympic Mountains in WA. I have since moved to the Rain Shadow of the Washington Cascades. The name seemed appropriate!
We plan to continue in bringing up outstanding purebred dogs, prepared for their homes better than any other puppies out there! Our Custom art, is expanding to include original paintings, and royal - heirloom quality knife builds! The fun continues! (Entrepreneurship is an addiction!)
